památník maďarských obětí Hazlov ’s life story

In December 1944, the Arrow government forced university students to continue their studies in Germany. The university students tried to return to Hungary before the end of the war.

When the train carrying them passed the village of Hazlov, they were attacked by American bombers. The reason for the tragedy that happened in Hazlov on April 11, 1945, according to an American officer, was that the American army mistakenly thought that the passenger train transporting Hungarian university students, professors and their family members from Germany to Hungary was a train carrying German ammunition, and therefore carried out an air attack against it.
The American fighter jets started bombing the train after seven o'clock in the evening, and the civilians trying to escape from the train into the nearby forest were also shot with machine guns.

According to the data available today, the American attack resulted in 23 deaths on the spot, while 63 people suffered serious injuries. 13 of the latter died in the hospital of the nearby town of As. Among the victims were three professors of the Budapest University of Technology (BME), three engineering teaching assistants, twenty engineering students, seven strict doctors and three family members.
