Balog István Kisvárdán született, a 65. közös gyalogezredben szolgált mint gyalogos. 24 éves korában, nőtlenként az orosz harctéren tűnt el, 1916-ban.

Hir az orosz fogságból: "Balog István népfelkelő volt kisvárdai lakos orosz fogságba jutván levelező lapot irt szüleinek, melyben dohányt, cigarettát és cukrot kér. A levelező lapot Leszienszki Závod permi kormányzóságban október 26-án adta fel és ujév napjára érkezett Kisvárdára."
